The First Stewards: Cherokee Roots in the Land

Long before hikers laced up boots or children splashed in the river, this land was home to the Cherokee Nation. Among the largest Indigenous groups in the Southeastern United States, the Cherokee settled near rivers like the Chauga, drawn by fertile land, fresh water, and bountiful game.

The river’s name—“Chauga”—is thought to originate from a Cherokee word. These waterways were central to Cherokee life, used for fishing, farming, travel, and ceremony.

But that life was upended during the 18th and early 19th centuries, as conflict with settlers and broken treaties gave way to forced removal. The Trail of Tears displaced thousands of Cherokee from their homeland, a tragic chapter whose echoes still linger in the land and local lore.

From Frontier to Footpaths: The Settler Era

With the Cherokee displaced, European-American settlers took root in the rolling hills of Oconee County. They built farms and water-powered mills along rivers and creeks, using the land’s resources to create small, self-sustaining communities.

Though most of those early buildings have disappeared, the same landscape—its rivers, hollows, and stone-strewn ridges—remains. Today’s visitors to Chau Ram unknowingly walk paths first trodden by both native peoples and early pioneers.

One of the coolest features for kids at Chau Ram County Park is the TRACK Trail, a fun and interactive hike designed just for young adventurers! This 1.3-mile loop winds through some of the park’s most scenic areas, including a 160-foot swinging bridge and rushing waterfalls. Along the way, kids can follow self-guided brochures or scan a QR code to join in on themed scavenger hunts, nature spotting, and learning games with friendly characters like TRACK the dog and Kip the dragonfly.
